Puerto Viejo De Talamanca, Costa Rica

Puerto Viejo De Talamanca Costa Rica

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a small coastal town on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast in the province of Limón. Popular with surfers and backpackers, it’s also an area where many foreigners are buying property and building homes. Clear water, coconut palms, excellent surf, and a laid‑back Caribbean vibe make Puerto Viejo a favorite among travelers. Located on the Caribbean coast about an hour south of Limón, Puerto Viejo is the main hub between the smaller villages of Cahuita and Manzanillo. The relaxed seaside town is surrounded by jungle, turquoise water, banana plantations, and scenic rivers. Once a small fishing village, Puerto Viejo has grown rapidly in recent years. Passionate surfers, drawn by the famous Salsa Brava waves, have made it a hotspot on the international surfing circuit. The town center now features many souvenir and surf shops, bars, restaurants, hotels, and tour operators. True to its beachside setting and Caribbean atmosphere, bicycles and pedestrians dominate the traffic along the coastal roads. With its blend of Afro‑Caribbean descendants, European expats, and indigenous Costa Ricans, Puerto Viejo charms visitors with a unique mix of people and cultures. Rastafari culture has a strong presence in town, and many Rastas sell handmade jewelry and other crafts along the lively roadside.
