McAllen, TX United States of America

McAllen, located in Hidalgo County at the southern tip of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley, is the largest city in the county and the 22nd most populous city in the state. The city extends south to the Rio Grande, directly across from Reynosa, Mexico, and lies about 70 miles (110 km) west of the Gulf of Mexico. As of 2017, McAllen’s population was estimated at 142,696. It anchors the fifth-most populous metropolitan area in Texas, and together with Reynosa forms a binational metropolitan region of nearly 1.52 million people. Originally settled in 1904 as a largely rural, agricultural community, McAllen experienced steady growth through the latter half of the 20th century, a trend that continues today. The rise of the maquiladora industry across the border and the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) significantly boosted cross-border trade with Mexico, helping transform McAllen into an important regional economic hub.
