Laredo, TX United States of America

Laredo is a city in, and the county seat of, Webb County, Texas, United States. It lies on the north bank of the Rio Grande in South Texas, directly across from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Laredo is unique in that it has flown seven flags (including the Flag of the Republic of the Rio Grande, now the city flag, in addition to the traditional Six Flags of Texas). Founded in 1755, it grew from a small village to the capital of the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande, and later into the largest inland port on the Mexico–United States border. Laredo’s economy is driven by international trade with Mexico, and many major transportation and logistics companies maintain facilities in the city. Located at the southern end of Interstate 35, Laredo is strategically positioned near manufacturers in northern Mexico. It is served by four international road bridges and one international rail bridge. According to the 2010 census, Laredo had a population of 236,091, making it the tenth-most populous city in Texas and the third-most populous city along the Mexico–United States border, after San Diego, California, and El Paso, Texas. Its metropolitan area, which covers all of Webb County, had a population of 250,304, ranking 178th in the United States. Laredo is also part of the bi-national Laredo–Nuevo Laredo Metropolitan Area with an estimated population of 636,516. With a population that is about 95.6% Hispanic or Latino (predominantly of Mexican origin), Laredo is among the least ethnically diverse cities in the United States. When economic, household, and social factors are included, it ranks as the 19th-least diverse among the nation’s 313 largest cities. The city is home to Texas A&M International University and Laredo College. Laredo International Airport is located within the city limits, while Quetzalcoatl International Airport serves the region from the Nuevo Laredo side of the border. Laredo’s largest annual event is the Washington’s Birthday Celebration, held from late January through most of February, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
