Canton (Guangzhou), China

Canton (Guangzhou) China

Guangzhou, also known as Canton, is the capital of Guangdong Province and the third-largest city in China after Beijing and Shanghai, with a population of more than 12 million. Founded in 214 BC, it has long been a hub for trade, cultural exchange, revolutions, and reforms, making it an essential stop for understanding what shapes modern China. Recognized as one of China’s twenty-four famous historical and cultural cities, Guangzhou does not have as many historic sites as cities like Beijing or Xi’an, but it offers its own distinctive heritage and atmosphere. The Pearl River runs through the heart of the city. In the evening, a river cruise is one of the best ways to enjoy Guangzhou’s stunning skyline, including dazzling views of the soaring Canton Tower illuminated against the night sky. Among the city’s key attractions are the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, with a history of about 1,400 years and considered one of Guangzhou’s four major Buddhist temples; Huaisheng Mosque (the “Remember the Sage” Mosque), originally built in the 7th century in memory of the Prophet Muhammad; and the Western Han Nanyue King’s Tomb Museum, the oldest and largest Han-dynasty tomb in the Lingnan region, known for its rich collection of funerary objects.
